Setting Boundaries and Crossing Borders

While I’m waiting for my laundry to finish, old school in a laundromat, I think it’s a good time to catch up!

When I woke up on Thursday, after getting woken up by my lovely roommates, I found out there was a new guy in our room. Sai and I started chatting while I was getting ready for the day, and he asked me about my plans. As I didn’t really have one, we agreed on spending the day together and to go to the Deutsches Museum. I just love that when you’re travelling, you start meeting people and hang out with them, random strangers who you know you will probably never see again. So odd, but yet so cool! Sai needed to get some work done first, so I went downstairs to the hostel’s cafe for some breakfast. They had some official breakfast going on, but it had closed already, so I settled for a toastie. And I kinda wish I hadn’t, for I had a hunch it came from the freezer, because it was still cold on the inside. But anyways, there was some food in my belly, and Sai and I went off to the museum. I had looked it up during breakfast, and it wasn’t my usual kind of museum, but more of a science one. Which doesn’t mean I am not interested in those kind of museums, I think they are fun, but the way I explained to Sai, I can appreciate it, I just don’t really understand it. There was stuff about how to build different bridges, robotics, water prevention and more. What I did find really cool, were all the planes they had on display. Really big ones, but also some smaller ones. When we walked upstairs, we came in a room with some “old” household devices, but then I saw to my horror an iPhone 5s displayed. How to make a 27 year old feel like a grandma. Thanks for that. We made our way back to the hostel after some late lunch, and I started packing my back again, tomorrow is train day number 2!

I got up bright and early to catch my train to Prague, which went quite smoothly this time. The only thing which was a bit confusing, was the seat reservation bit. On my interrail app, they say it is not necessary to reserve a seat, but for anyone who is planning to travel through Europe by train in summer, please do reserve one. It makes your life so much easier. Because I took a random seat, and it was all fine at first, but once we were closing in on Prague, two girls were claiming their seats. And rightfully so. I collected my stuff, and moved to a free seat for the last few stops. We arrived at Praha Hlavni Nadrazi, aka Prague Main Station, and I made my way to the tram to my hostel. Just walking here and the short tram ride filled me with joy. This is such a pretty and wonderful city!! I got to the hostel, tired and hungry, so I took a little walk and got some groceries for dinner. Let’s explore Prague tomorrow!

When I woke up the next morning, I was sweating already. It was supposed to be around 35 degrees today, so I made a plan to go for breakfast, and then go to a museum, as they are usually a lot cooler inside than out. When I walked to my tramstop yesterday, I passed by this beautiful building, and I then knew I had to go inside as well. It turned out to be the National Museum, where they had a lot of exhibitions of history things. More my cup of tea. Afterwards I took a tram to one of the parks on top of a hill, having a great view over Old Town. Since it was way too hot to function normally, I went back to the hostel for a nap, to regain some energy.

I had plans tonight! Nothing too exciting, but still a lot of fun! I found another haunted tour via Airbnb, and since I loved the one in Paris so much, I figured I should do one here as well. And I was not disappointed! Steve, a Canadian guy, took us around some parts of the old city and had pretty cool stories, which mostly happend around the 16th century. Finishing on the main square of Old Town, we had a good view of the astronomical clocktower, which has an hourly “show”. It wasn’t as big as the show in Munich, but still cool to see. The guy who designed it, was apparently way ahead for his time, and he had a gruesome end, but he proved everyone wrong who had wronged him.

After another sweaty night, the next day was quite different. Still pretty warm, but now filled with wind, and occasionally some rain, I made my way towards the caste across the river. It is this whole complex of buildings, a cathedral, some smaller castles and the surrounding cobbled lanes and streets. I took an audio tour, but couldn’t really focus after my short night. The information was for sure interesting, but I just wanted to chill out for a bit. So back to the hostel, and getting ready for another travel day.

Which brings us to today, because this morning I took the train from Prague to Vienna, which is where I am right now! It was another adventurous page in my journey. Remember I told you to reserve a seat? I guess a lot of people were not told this before today. The train was packed. Backpackers all over, not having a seat and thus taking random ones, I barely could make my way through the corridor to get to my seat. So again, please do make that reservation. We arrived in Vienna with just 30 minutes delay, I’m already getting used to it, so backpack back on my back, and into sweaty trams and metros. My shirt was soaked when I arrived at the hostel, so time for a quick shower and a nap. I can feel that maybe I am doing a bit too much sometimes, so now and again it is catching up with me. Which is fine, just a reminder to set your boundaries and listen to your body. Right now, it needs food and some nice and clean clothes, and they should be ready any minute now!

Tomorrow I’ll explore Vienna, with some tips from a lovely friend who has lived here, so those are the best ones! Then on Wednesday, it is a quick stop in Budapest, so I will update you guys later!
